Webinar-RMI and National Grid Examine the Role of Non-Pipeline Alternatives in the Energy Transition
As the United States strives to meet ambitious climate targets and transition to cleaner energy sources, the changing role of natural gas utilities is paramount. With over 77 million customers receiving energy from gas utilities, a shift away from fossil fuels is challenging but essential. In this webinar, utility decarbonization experts from RMI, National Grid, and PG&E discuss the research findings from a recent RMI-National Grid joint report on the role of non-pipeline alternatives (NPAs) and integrated energy planning in shaping the energy transition.
Non-pipeline alternatives aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce costs by offering alternatives to traditional natural gas systems. These can include electrification of a building’s equipment or connection to lower-carbon infrastructure like thermal energy networks. National Grid and RMI’s research focused on nine case studies from the US and Europe that shed light on current efforts underway, and what challenges must be addressed to advance this promising solution in step with better integrated energy planning by utilities.

This aged really poorly! Here we are 10 years later and experiencing the exact problems the video claims wouldn't happen :)) Wind and solar are still uncontrollable and intermittent and don't provide reliable power without firm backup. Storage is still expensive. Wind and solar also tend to go awol during extreme weather when electricity is needed the most as many parts of the world have experienced recently. The modelling you presented doesn't seem to account for such cases.

It is interesting that you seem to be concentrated on forced air furnaces instead of radiant heat sources. (Maybe I missed something or was just assuming.) Given that the RMI headquarters is mostly heated with passive solar (a form of radiant heat) I would have thought that you would have included that technology in your estimates. Human comfort is measured by air temperature, mean radiant temperature, humidity and airflow. By concentrating on air tightness while employing conventional forced air furnaces you may get more acceptance from conventional stick builders. However there is a limit to the amount of continuous improvement that can be done with this tech. There is a lower limit that cannot be crossed in terms of energy efficiency. What is the data about employing different technologies such as radiant heaters with heat recovery ventilators to allow for more air exchanges to still maintaining warmth as opposed to the route of conventional forced air and tighter buildings? Just trying to think of a way to reword our question of minimizing embodied energy and annual energy usage without going to the assumed/conventional answer? Thank you for any comments?

I wonder how much climate would be saved if no one attended these global events. It is a binary outcome. Have thousands of polluters fly across the globe on the grifters paradise tour that never ends, or let them work in the fields locally to pay off their climate debt for a life time of wasteful living. It is no longer stupidity that holds us back, but purposeful manipulations of agents that engage in the climate fraud.

Amory makes great suggestions for better efficiency, ie. lighter coloured pavement and roofing in cities will reduce the heat island effect. However there are complications that can arise with such changes. In one case where they replaced a dark roof with a white roof they began to get moisture problems in the roof. Originally the dark roof would heat up during the day in the sun, baking the moisture out. When they replaced it with a white roof it reflected the sun's heat, the roof did not heat up and the moisture remained and accumulated, causing major problems.
